Going against the grain isn’t easy.
Sure, the title of being an “entrepreneur” in today’s world is a lot cooler than it used to be. But that doesn’t make the process any less difficult. Being an entrepreneur still means enduring a lot of tough lessons, hearing “No” too many times to count, and good old fashioned pavement-hitting work ethic.
One of the biggest challenges of being an entrepreneur, however, is learning how to ignore the noise around you.
It’s not an easy lifestyle — and definitely not for the weak of heart.
And a big part of that is coming to terms with the fact that not many people will fully understand what it is you “do.” In fact, their entire perception of you and what you deem “important” may make you feel judged in some way.
Here are 10 things people get wrong about ambitious entrepreneurs.
1. “You work too much.”
Too much is relative.
If you’re doing what you love, there is no such thing as too much.
2. “All you care about is money.”
No, however money is what keeps a business alive, and when you are an entrepreneur you care about your business in the same way a parent cares for a child.
3. “You don’t have any work/life balance.”
When you are your own boss, there is no separation between work and life.
They are intertwined.
4. “You don’t take No for an answer.”
You’re right, and that’s a good thing.
5. “The only person you care about is yourself.”
Building something of value requires some amount of sacrifice.
Which is why not everyone can handle being an entrepreneur.
6. “You don’t even have a real job.”
Most entrepreneurs can attest that the day they left their 9am — 5pm was the day they signed up for a 7am — 11pm gig.
Being an entrepreneur means you work twice as hard.
7. “You set unrealistic goals.”
Is there any other way?
Why would you set out to do something that is easily attainable?
The joy is in the journey.
8. “You never have time to hang out.”
When your own money (or other people’s money) is on the line, priorities have to be set.
That’s just part of the game.
9. “You think you’re better than everyone else.”
It’s not about being better than someone else, it’s about being better than yesterday.
10. “You always have to do things differently.”
And that’s the greatest quality.
